Excellent ... Do I need equipment?

Are you really an academy?

Absolutely.  The term academy is defined as a "school of special instruction" or an "institution for the advancement of art, literature or science."  Our coaches are trained and certified professionals by the United States Fencing Association's Coaches College.  Our assistant instructors are experienced and accomplished fencers, trained by WGFA.

Our students are not simply given a weapon and told to have fun.  Our coaches do not shower the most talented pupils with all of their time.  Each student is given the same amount of attention to their training, so that each may realize their maximum potential.  Natural talent varies, but all students are equal and deserve respect for doing their absolute best.

Many forget that the sport of fencing is descended from a true Western martial art.  We conduct our academy as a traditional martial art school, and provide levels of advancement.  Depending upon age, students are promoted upon completion of time-in-rank, a practical and a written exam.  When a WGFA fencer becomes a competitor, he or she is a true fencer.  They understand many offensive and defensive tactics, have a thorough knowledge of the rules, are capable of handling the positive and negative stresses of combat, and can conduct themselves in a manner expected of lady and gentlemen athletes.

All of our students receive competitive training, regardless of their desire to actually compete or fence recreationally.  Whether the goal is physical fitness, a new hobby, or serious competition, there is no difference in our training pedagogy.  When a weapon is placed in their hand, they must understand how to use it.
